Corrente

Corrente

Corrente. An anti-Fascist association of young Italian artists formed by Renato Birolli in Milan in 1938. Guttuso was one of the founder members; Afro and Mirko were among those who joined later. The association had no fixed programme, but was opposed to the provincialism of the Novecento. The members stood for the defence of ‘modern’ art at a time when the Nazi campaign against degenerate art was spreading to Italy. Corrente arranged exhibitions in Milan in March and December 1939; older Milanese artists were included in the first, but only the younger generation participated in the second. It also published a fortnightly review of literature, politics, and the arts. This grew out of a Fascist youth journal called Vita giovanile, founded in Milan in January 1938; in October 1938 it was retitled Corrente di vita giovanile (Stream of youthful life) and by this time had become anti-Fascist in stance. From February 1939 the title became simply Corrente. The journal ceased publication in 1943 and the activities of the group were dissipated by the Second World War.
