Meunier, Constantin
Meunier, Constantin (1831–1905). Belgian sculptor and painter, well known for his sincere but rather heavy-handed glorification of the nobility of labour in his treatment of such subjects as miners, factory workers, and stevedores. ‘ Meunier did in sculpture for the urban proletariat what Zola had done for it in literature. He may not have encompassed all the inherent possibilities of his theme, but at least he gave to proletarian society an archetype which was to be as commonly recognized as Van Dyck's characterization of the English gentleman was in the seventeenth century’ ( Fred Licht, Sculpture: 19th and 20th Centuries, 1967). In the early 20th century he had considerable influence on younger sculptors interested in Social Realist subjects. There is a museum of his work in Brussels and his most ambitious work, the Monument to Labour (erected after his death), is in the Place de Trooz there.

Constantin Meunier
Constantin Meunier , 1831–1905, Belgian sculptor and painter. In paintings of monastic life and of factory workers and miners, his work expressed the dignity of labor, in a style marked by romantic idealism. Turning to sculpture exclusively at the age of 50, he produced the bronze reliefs and monuments for which he is known. His masterpiece, the unfinished Monument to Labor (Brussels), comprises four stone reliefs, Industry, The Mine, Harvest, and Harbor; four bronze statues, The Sower, The Smith, The Miner, and The Ancestor; and a bronze group, Maternity. Many of his works are housed in the Constantin Meunier Museum in Brussels. |
