Conall
Conall
1. A legendary warrior, the son of Eochaid (4), who gives his name to the place-name Carn Conaill in Co. Limerick. When Conall's five sons attack the sídh of Grian at Cnoc Gréine, she pursues them and changes them into badgers, after which they are hunted, killed, and eaten by Cormac Gaileng. Hearing this, Conall goes to Cnoc Gréine and does battle with Grian. Then she pauses and asks Conall's true identity. ‘Come here,’ she says, ‘that I may make a gift of prosperity to you.’ She sprinkles magic dust on him, upon which he wanders off and dies at Carn Conaill, nearby. 2. A tale-telling traveller in oral tradition. When his sons accidentally kill one of his king's sons, Conall is sent in quest to Lochlainn [Scandinavia]. Once there he is obliged to tell three tales, Scheherazade-like, to save himself. One story employs the motif of an encounter with a one-eyed giant. The third story reveals that he once saved the life of the king of Lochlainn, and so Conall himself is saved. In English versions of his story he bears the agnomen Yellowclaw. |
