Commius

Commius

Commius was a Gallic noble who allied himself with Julius Caesar and was rewarded with the kingship of the Gallic Atrebates. In 55 bc he was sent by Caesar to win over British tribes prior to the invasion, but was taken prisoner. Released at the end of the 55 bc invasion, he participated in the 54 bc invasion and was intermediary when Cassivellaunus sued for terms. In 52 bc he sided with the revolt of Vercingetorix in Gaul, and on his defeat fled to Britain founding a new dynasty of the Atrebates in the Berkshire/north Hampshire area.

Commius
