Comedie des Champs-Elysees

Comédie des Champs-Élysées

Comédie des Champs-Élysées, Paris. Built in 1912 in the Avenue Montaigne as an annexe to the concert hall of the same name, the reputation of this theatre was made in the 1920s with Gémier's avant-garde productions of plays by Strindberg and Shaw. He was followed briefly by the Pitoëffs, and then by Jouvet, who began his collaboration with Giraudoux at this theatre in 1928 with a production of Siegfried. During the 1950s the theatre was owned by Anouilh, who staged boulevard plays and revivals of his own works. The 1960s were similarly almost totally devoted to Anouilh, but later the work of a variety of authors was staged, notably a revival in 1983 of Pirandello's Each in His Own Way.
