Colditz

Colditz

Colditz, a castle built in Saxony, Germany, in 1014. It was, variously a prison, a lunatic asylum, and a temporary concentration camp before becoming a prisoner-of-war camp (Oflag IVC) in 1939 for Polish and French officers. Because it was regarded as totally secure and as the war progressed it was used to confine difficult prisoners of many nationalities who were inveterate escapers. It contained many well-known characters such as Lt Airey Neave, Wing Commander Douglas Bader, General Komorowski, and Lt-Colonel David Stirling (see Special Air Service). Altogether there were more than 300 escape attempts but only 30 succeeded.
