Cody

Cody , city (1990 pop. 7,897), seat of Park co., NW Wyo., on the Shoshone River in a sheep, cattle, and irrigated farm area; founded and inc. 1901 by William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill). It is a tourist resort at the eastern entrance to Yellowstone National Park , with dude ranches and a colorful frontier town flavor. Manufactures include concrete and gypsum and lumber products. Cody is headquarters for the Shoshone National Forest. Of interest are the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, with museums on Buffalo Bill, the Plains Indians, firearms, the region's natural history, and Western art; and an annual rodeo. Shoshone Canyon and the Shoshone project are nearby.

Cody ♂, ♀ Transferred use of the Irish surname, an Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Cuidighthigh ‘descendant of Cuidightheach’ (originally a byname for a helpful person), or of Mac Óda ‘son of Óda’ (a personal name of uncertain origin). Use as a given name in the United States especially has been at least in part inspired by William Frederick Cody (1846–1917), better known as ‘Buffalo Bill’, the showman of the Wild West.
