Barnes, Clive Alexander
Barnes, Clive Alexander (1927– ), English dance and drama critic, who after leaving Oxford became a freelance journalist, writing mainly on the performing arts until in 1961 he became dance critic of the London Times and editor of Dance and Dancers. In 1965 he became dance critic of the New York Times, being appointed drama critic also two years later. In 1977 he moved to the New York Post, where he holds the same positions, as well as being Associate Editor. One of the most important and powerful critics in America, he has been attacked both by directors and by other critics for a certain lack of appreciation of American theatrical sensibility, perhaps because he has on occasion supported Off-Broadway and international theatre at the expense of commercial Broadway productions; his judgements have on the whole been justified by time.
