Cleethorpes, England/UK Thorpe, Clethorpe ‘Hamlets near Clee’ from the Old Scandinavian thorp ‘hamlet’ or ‘outlying farmstead’ and Clee from the Old English clæg ‘clay’, thus a ‘Hamlet near a Place where there is Clay’.

Cleethorpes
Cleethorpes , town (1991 pop. 33,238), North East Lincolnshire, E central England, on the Humber River estuary. It is a popular resort, with many recreational facilities. The nearby Church of Old Clee was dedicated in 1192 by the bishop of Lincoln. |

Cleethorpes NE. Lincs., Thorpe 1406, Clethorpe 1552. ‘Outlying settlement (OScand. thorp) near Clee’. The latter, now Old Clee, is Cleia in 1086 (DB), from OE clǣg ‘clay’ with reference to the soil.
