Claude III Audran

Audran, Claude III

Audran, Claude III (b Lyons, 25 Aug. 1658; d Paris, 28 May 1734). The best-known member of a family of French painters and decorators. He was one of the leading decorative painters of the time, his output including such things as painted panelling and harpsichord cases, but most of his work has been destroyed or obscured by later additions. A great number of drawings survive, however (mainly in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm), and these show him to have been a significant figure in the creation of the Rococo style. In 1704 he was appointed curator at the Luxembourg Palace, Paris, where Rubens's Marie de Médicis cycle was then housed, and he introduced his assistant Watteau to this masterpiece by an artist who was to have an enormous influence on his work.
