Fleury, Claude
Fleury, Claude (1640–1723), ecclesiastical historian. From 1689 he was one of the tutors to Louis XIV's grandsons, and after his death (1715) he was chosen as confessor to the young Louis XV. His chief work is his Histoire ecclésiastique (20 vols., 1691–1720), the first large-scale history of the Church, which is held in repute for its learning and judgement.

Claude Fleury
Claude Fleury , 1640–1723?, French ecclesiastical historian, a Roman Catholic priest, confessor to Louis XV, and author of the learned and unbiased Histoire ecclésiastique. This great work, in 20 volumes, occupied him for 30 years. It was the first systematic history of the Church, its organization, doctrines, and rites. |
