Reeve, Clara
Reeve, Clara (1729–1807), a novelist whose The Champion of Virtue; a Gothic Story (1777) was reprinted in 1778 as The Old English Baron. The author acknowledged her debt to Walpole's The Castle of Otranto. Her hero, the virtuous and noble Edmund, moves resolutely through many adventures of romantic horror in order to obtain his rightful heritage. See romantic fiction.

Clara Reeve
Clara Reeve , 1729–1807, English novelist. Her most famous work, The Champion of Virtue: A Gothic Story (1777), was written in imitation of Walpole's Castle of Otranto. After the first edition it was entitled The Old English Baron. |
