Ciaran

Ciarán

Ciarán ♂ Traditional Irish name, now popular elsewhere in the English-speaking world (usually without the accent). It was originally a byname, a diminutive form of ciar ‘black’, which was borne by two Irish saints: a hermit of the 5th century and the founder of the monastery at Clonmacnoise (d. 547).

Variants: Cieran; Kieran, Kieron (borne, for example, by the Irish actor Kieron Moore, b. 1925), Kieren, Keiran. (Anglicized forms)
