Chungking

Chungking

Chungking (Chongqing, Ch'ung-ch'ing) City on the River Yangtze, s China. From the 14th century it was part of a unified China. It became a treaty port in 1891, and was the wartime capital of China (1937–45). It is a transport and shipping centre. Industries: chemicals, steel, iron, silk, cotton textiles, plastics. Pop. (2002 est.) 2,311,500.
