Amberger, Christoph
Amberger, Christoph (d Augsburg, 1561/2). German painter (mainly of portraits) and designer. He spent most of his life in Augsburg, which had many cultural and economic ties with Italy (he met Titian when he visited the city in 1548), and his style emulates the grandeur and richness of the Venetian School, paying as much attention to dress and jewellery as to characterization (Charles V, c.1532, Gemäldegalerie, Berlin). His rare figure compositions (Virgin and Child between Sts Ulrich and Afra, 1554, Augsburg Cathedral) are less distinguished. Amberger also designed coins, façade paintings, and statuary.
