Dotremont, Christian
Dotremont, Christian (1922–79). Belgian writer (mainly a poet, but also a novelist) and painter. In 1947 he founded a movement called Le Surréalisme Revolutionaire in Brussels, but when it became evident that it would be impossible to co-operate with the French Surrealists (he was opposed by their leader Breton), he became one of the founders of Cobra in 1948. Dotremont was the group's chief spokesman and the main editor of its periodical. He also collaborated with other Cobra artists in creating pictures in which words and images are combined. In his later paintings he used quasi-Oriental calligraphic forms that he called logograms.
He was no relation to Philippe Dotremont (1898–1969), a Belgian industrialist who made an impressive collection of contemporary art, especially rich in American work (curiously, he never visited the USA). |
