Chin-Chin

Chin‐Chin

Chin‐Chin (1914), a musical by Anne Caldwell (book, lyrics), R. H. Burnside (book), Ivan Caryll (music), James O'Dea (lyrics). [Globe Theatre, 295 perf.] The evil Abanazar ( Charles T. Aldrich) would not only steal the magic golden lamp owned by Aladdin ( Douglas Stevenson), he also would help its prospective buyer, the rich American Cornelius Bond ( R. E. Graham), stop Aladdin from marrying Bond's daughter, Violet ( Helen Falconer). But two canny slaves of the lamp, Chin Hop Hi ( Fred Stone) and Chin Hop Lo ( Dave Montgomery), find magical ways of assuming many wonderful disguises and even of transporting Aladdin to exotic places in order to retain the lamp for him and assist in his winning Violet. Notable songs: Goodbye Girls, I'm Through; Ragtime Temple Bells. The Charles Dillingham show was the biggest musical hit of its season (except for the annual Hippodrome extravaganza), in large part because of the acrobatic and clean humor of Montgomery and Stone, which invariably mixed knowing wit with childlike fun.
