Ercall, Child's
Ercall, Child's & Ercall, High Shrops. Arcalun [sic], Archelov 1086 (DB), Childes Ercalewe, Magna Ercalewe 1327. Possibly an old hill-name *Earcaluw from OE ēar ‘gravel, mud’ and calu(w) ‘bare hill’, first applied to a settlement and then to a district (the two Ercalls are some 6 miles apart). Affixes are OE cild ‘son of a noble family’ and Latin magna ‘great’.
