Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai or Chiengmai , city (1990 pop. 164,902), capital of Chiang Mai prov., N Thailand, on the Ping River, near the Myanmar border. It is the economic, cultural, and religious center of the northern provinces. The terminus of a railroad from Bangkok, Chiang Mai is also linked to the capital by air and highway. The city is a shipping point for the agricultural products of the surrounding region. Long the center of Thailand's teak industry, Chiang Mai also produces silver and wood articles, pottery, and silk and cotton goods. Tourism is a growing industry, and the city has also become a design center. Chiang Mai's population is mainly Lao.

Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai, Thailand Zimmé Its full name is Nopburi Si Nakhon Ping Chiang Mai. Although founded in 1296 on the banks of the Ping River by Mengrai, King of Lanna (1296–1317), the name means ‘New City’ from chiang ‘city’ and mai ‘new’. Having conquered the Kingdom of Haripunjaya in 1281, Mengrai made it the capital of his newly founded Kingdom of Lanna, the ‘Land of a Million Rice Fields’ from lan ‘million’ and na ‘rice fields’, in 1296 because of its central location. Lanna's name was later changed to Chiang Mai. The city was occupied by the Burmese between 1558 and 1776.

Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai Province and city in nw Thailand. Founded in the 13th century, the city of Chiang Mai is the commercial, cultural and religious centre of n Thailand. The city has air, rail and road links with Bangkok and is an export point for local produce. Industries: handicrafts, silk. Pop. (2000) 174,438 (city); 1,500,127 (province).
