Baltimore, largest city in Maryland, situated on the Patapsco River near Chesapeake Bay. The present city, founded in 1729, soon became an important shipping point for agricultural products, and later served as a port for privateers and clipper ships. The Continental Congress met for a time in Baltimore (1776), and Fort McHenry is famous for its role in the composition of “The Star‐Spangled Banner”. A great fire partially destroyed the city (1904), which since its reconstruction has been a leading industrial center. Educational institutions include Johns Hopkins University, Peabody Institute, and the University of Baltimore. Among Baltimore authors have been Lanier, Tabb, Lizette W. Reese, F.H. Smith, H.L. Mencken, Karl Shapiro, and D.L. Coburn.
