Château‐Thierry
Château‐Thierry, Picardy/France Égalité‐sur‐Marne ‘Thierry's Castle’. Named after the castle built in 718 by Charles Martel (c.688–741), the Frankish ruler (715–41), for Thierry (or Theodoric) IV (713–37), the puppet Merovingian king (720–37) under the control of Martel. During the French Revolution (1789), the name was changed temporarily to Égalité‐sur‐Marne after Louis Philippe Joseph (1747–93), Duke of Orléans, who was known as Philippe Égalité ‘Equality’ because he supported the Revolution; the town lies on the River Marne.
