Charlotte Dundas

Charlotte Dundas

Charlotte Dundas, the first vessel in the world to use steam propulsion commercially. She was a small wooden paddle steamer, with a steam engine designed by William Symington. Built on the River Clyde to the order of Lord Dundas, a governor of the Forth and Clyde Canal, she was named after his daughter. The engine drove a single paddle wheel fitted in the stern and made her first voyage in 1802 when she covered a distance of 32 kilometres (20 mls.) on the Forth and Clyde Canal in six hours with two 70-ton lighters in tow, thus becoming the first steam tugboat ever to operate. However, this experiment was not deemed a success—the canal's governors feared the wash would damage the canal—and she was withdrawn from service the following year. The first commercially successful steamboat is now acknowledged to be Roger Fulton's ‘North River Steamboat’ otherwise known as the Clermont. See also vulcan.
