Macintosh, Charles (1766–1843). Industrial chemist. Macintosh, born in Glasgow, was an extremely inventive scientist, who experimented with the production of dyestuffs, alum, steel, and bleaching powder. His work on possible uses for coal naphtha, a by-product of the gas industry, led to a patent in 1823 for producing waterproof clothing, using India rubber dissolved in naphtha. His factory at Manchester was taken over by the North British Rubber Company.
