Charles Harold Dodd

Dodd, Charles Harold

Dodd, Charles Harold (1884–1973) English (though born in Wales) NT scholar who was professor in Manchester and Cambridge. He introduced the term ‘realized eschatology’, later changed to ‘eschatology in process of inauguration’, as an interpretation of Jesus' teaching on the kingdom of God, in contrast to the futurist interpretation of Albert Schweitzer. Dodd's greatest work was, however, in Johannine studies. Uncharacteristically for one associated with the then current Biblical Theology movement, Dodd had an immense knowledge of Hellenistic literature and was himself a thinker in the Platonic tradition.
