Charles Evans

Charles Evans 1850-1935, American librarian and bibliographer, b. Boston. He organized many major American libraries including the Indianapolis public library, the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, and the Omaha public library. He also classified the Newberry Library in Chicago. An authority on American literature, Evans published American Bibliography (1903-55), a chronological directory of all material published in the United States from 1639 to 1820.

Evans, Charles (1850–1935), born in Boston, was a librarian at the Boston Athenaeum, the Public Library of Indianapolis, and the Enoch Pratt Free Library (Baltimore). His American Bibliography (12 vols., 1903–4) chronologically catalogues 35,854 titles of works printed in America (1639–1799). Volume 13 (1799–1800) was added by Clifford K. Shipton (1954), who with James E. Mooney compiled a short‐title Index (2 vols., 1969).
