Cotton, Charles (1630–87), wrote the dialogue between Piscator and Viator which forms the second part in the fifth edition of The Compleat Angler (1676). He also published Scarronides (1664), a burlesque of Virgil, and in 1665 a burlesque of Lucian. His topographical poem The Wonders of the Peake (1681) celebrates the beauties and curiosities of the Peak District. Cotton's love of his native landscapes and particularly of ‘fair Dove, princess of rivers’, is also expressed in many of his Poems on Several Occasions (1689). Wordsworth and Coleridge both admired his work.
