Causley, Charles
Causley, Charles (1917– ), poet, born in Launceston, Cornwall. His volumes of verse include Farewell, Aggie Weston (1951), Survivor's Leave (1953), Union Street (1957), Johnny Alleluia (1961), Underneath the Water (1968), and Figgie Hobbin (1970). He has published various collections of children's stories and anthologies of verse. His poetry is marked by a powerful simplicity of diction and rhythm, and shows the influence of popular songs and the ballad tradition. Innocence is a recurrent theme, and his admiration for Clare is the direct inspiration of several poems. Religious and seafaring images, often interwoven, are also characteristic. His own selection of Collected Poems 1951–75 appeared in 1975. Later works include Secret Destinations (1984), A Field of Vision (1988), and Collected Poems (1992).
