Chandernagore
Chandernagore, West Bengal/India May be derived from the course of the River Hugli here which is in the shape of a half moon from the Bengali chand ‘moon’ and nagore ‘city’. The4 name is also spelt Chandannagar which has the same meaning. Founded by the French in 1673, it was captured by the English in 1757, but returned to the French in 1815. It joined India in 1949.
