Champagne District in ne France, made up of the Aube, Marne, Haute-Marne, and Ardennes departments. The major city is Reims. It was a centre for European trade and commerce in the 11th–13th centuries. During World War II there was heavy fighting along the River Marne. It is an arid region, renowned for its champagne, a sparkling white wine that can only be produced in the district. Area: 25,606sq km (9886sq mi). Pop. (1999) 1,342,202.
