Ceylon
Ceylon, Indian Ocean island 435 km. (270 mi.) long inhabited by some six million Sinhalese and Tamils which had been a British colony since 1818. By March 1942 it was one of the few remaining sources of natural rubber for the Allies. More important, it was strategically crucial if British contact with India was to be maintained. Soon after Japan entered the war in December 1941 Australian troops were temporarily garrisoned there until British forces arrived, and the British Eastern Fleet was initially based there. To avoid the failures that had occurred in Singapore as a result of divided control (see Brooke-Popham), Churchill, when he appointed Vice-Admiral Geoffrey Layton C-in-C Ceylon in March 1942, gave him unparalleled powers over civilians and military alike to make the island ready to defend itself. Layton was given little time to prepare, for the following month a powerful Japanese naval task force launched a raid into the Indian Ocean (see Map 51) and attacked the capital, Colombo, and the port of Trincomalee, but it eventually withdrew and the island saw no more fighting. In June 1944 Kandy became the HQ of South-East Asia Command and that December a British committee of enquiry arrived to investigate the island's desire for independence which was granted in 1948.
