Celsus

Celsus

Celsus (2nd cent.), pagan philosopher. His ‘True Discourse’ (c.178) is the earliest literary attack on Christianity of which details have survived; most of it is preserved in Origen's reply. Celsus praised the Logos doctrine and the Christian moral code, but he objected to the exclusive claims of the Church and appealed to Christians to abandon their religious and political intolerance. He found the doctrines of the Incarnation and Crucifixion repugnant.
