Beaux, Cecilia
Beaux, Cecilia (1855–1942). American painter, active mainly in her native Philadelphia and in New York. Her training included a period in Paris, where she studied at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi, 1888–9. She was a highly successful and much honoured society portraitist, working in a dashing and fluid style similar to that of Sargent. Her sitters included celebrities such as Henry James and Theodore Roosevelt, as well as leading personalities of the First World War (her last major commission came from the US War Portraits Commission in 1919). In 1930 she published her autobiography, Background with Figures. Examples of her work are in many American museums.
