Catanzaro
Catanzaro, Calabria/Italy Catasarion/Katantzarion Originally founded by the Byzantines in the 10th century as Catasarion, the name may mean ‘Below the Terraces’ from the Greek cata ‘on’ or ‘near to’ and the Arabic anzār ‘terrace’, a reference to the orchards and gardens that surrounded the city which overlooks the Ionian Sea.

Catanzaro
Catanzaro , city (1991 pop. 96,614), capital of Catanzaro prov. and of Calabria, S Italy, on a hill above the Ionian Sea. It is a commercial center, with flour mills and distilleries. Employment opportunities there are limited, and the per capita income is low. Founded (10th cent.) by the Byzantines, Catanzaro was famous (11th–17th cent.) for its velvets and damasks. |
