Canton
Canton, China, USA Nanwu Cheng, Wuyang Cheng, Ban‐Yü, Nanhai Guangzhai (China)1. China (Guangdong): the local name is Guangzhou. The city is the capital of Guangdong province from which Canton gets its conventional European name; this originated with the Portuguese who called it Cantão in the 16th century. It means ‘Large Region’ from guăng and zhōu. However, it has been suggested that guăng meant ‘yellow’ in the native tongue of the original inhabitants of the region and that the Chinese guăng is an attempt to approximate the sound of the original language. The city gives its name to one of the two major Chinese dialects, Cantonese, spoken in the south and Hong Kong. Wuyang Cheng means ‘City of Five Goats’ and refers to a myth about five immortal beings who are said either to have raised five goats of different colours or who appeared as goats. The city was then named Ban‐Yü after the two hills, Ban and Yü, when the city spread to embrace both.2. USA: seventeen states have a town or city named after the city in China, either directly because they were believed to be diametrically opposite—on the other side of the earth—to the Chinese city, or because they had some other connection, such as trade.
