Calixto García y Iñigues
Calixto García y Iñigues , 1839–98, Cuban revolutionist, a leader in the Ten Years War (1868–78). Captured and imprisoned until 1878, he entered upon revolutionary activities immediately after his release and was again arrested. In 1895 he went to the United States and shortly afterward played an important part in the revolution in Cuba and in the Spanish-American War, particularly distinguishing himself at El Caney. Sent as a member of a committee to discuss Cuban affairs with President McKinley in 1898, he died in Washington, D.C. Garcia y Iñigues, Calixto
Garcia y Iñigues, Calixto (1836–98) Cuban nationalist. He led his country's preliminary struggles for independence from Spain. A leader during the Ten Years' War (1868–78), and the Little War (1879–80), his military efforts enjoyed scant success and resulted in his prolonged imprisonment. Cuban troops under his command supported US forces during the Spanish-American War, but Garcia, shortly before his death, rejected his erstwhile allies, fearing that Cuba had simply exchanged one master for another.
