Cagliari

Cagliari, Sardinia/Italy Cardlis, Caralis/Calares The origins of the name are uncertain, but the present name is derived from the Latin Caralis which itself was derived from the Greek Cardlis. The root of the name may be from a Phoenician word karel ‘City of God’ or ‘Large City’, the Phoenicians beginning to settle here in the 8th century bc. Ancient sources gave the name in the plural, that is, Calares or Caralis.
