CSU

CSU

CSU (Christian Social Union) (Germany) A Bavarian conservative sister party of the CDU, which does not exist in Bavaria. Founded in 1945, except for the years 1954–7 it has always formed the state's government, commanding an absolute majority in the state parliament since 1962. It tends to be more conservative than the CDU, and has stood for federalism, the protection of the family, and high standards in education. As a coalition partner of the CDU, it has had considerable influence on national politics, especially in the Ministries of the Interior and Agriculture, providing successive ministers during its years in government. Led by Stoiber since 1993, it consolidated and extended its absolute majority in Bavaria, while for the 2002 general elections it fielded the joint candidate of the CDU and CSU for the chancellorship.
