CENTO
CENTO (Central Treaty Organization) The successor to the Baghdad Pact, which was reorganized to take account of the new anti-Western regime that had come to power in Iraq. It included the UK, Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan, and accorded the US observer status. Its primary function was to provide a link between the Asian SEATO and the European NATO military alliances in defence against Soviet expansionism in the context of the Cold War. It was dissolved in 1979, following the Iranian Revolution.
