Buxar, Battle of

Buxar, Battle of (22 October 1764) A decisive battle at the town of Buxar in north-east India, which confirmed the EAST INDIA COMPANY's control of Bengal and Bihar. Facing the Company were the combined forces of the MOGUL emperor ( Shah Alam), the governor of Oudh ( Shuja ad-Daula), and the dispossessed governor of Bengal ( Mir Qasim). The Company's victory achieved recognition of its predominance in the region, demonstrated by the transfer of the diwani (revenue collecting powers) to the Company's agents in 1765.

Buxar

Buxar or Baksr , town (1991 pop. 55,660), Bihar state, E central India. A British victory at Buxar in 1764 assured British control of the Bengal area. In Hindu mythology, it is connected to the god Rama.
