Streeter, Burnett Hillman

Streeter, Burnett Hillman (1874–1937). English NT scholar, Provost of the Queen's College, Oxford, killed in an air crash, 1937. His Four Gospels (1924) remained for a long time the classical exposition of the view, first propounded by C. Lachmann in 1835, that Mark was the earliest gospel, that Matthew and Luke both made use of a source designated by the symbol Q, and that in the case of Luke this source was first combined with his own material (a first draft of the gospel, ‘Proto-Luke’) and later supplemented by the use of Mark.

Streeter, Burnett Hillman (1874–1937), NT scholar. From 1905 to 1933 he was a Fellow of Queen's College, Oxford (Provost from 1933 to 1937) and from 1915 to 1934 also a canon of Hereford. His researches into the Synoptic Problem helped to establish among English Churchmen belief in the priority of Mk. and the existence of ‘Q’. In The Four Gospels (1924) he set out his conclusions on the Gospels as a whole and expounded his thesis on the ‘Caesarean text’.
