Burletta

Burletta

Burletta, originally a farce with interpolated music or a short comic opera. The name was extended in the mid-19th century to include plays put on at the minor theatres which, in order to circumvent the monopoly of the Patent Theatres, contained at least five songs in each act, and sometimes instrumental interludes or solo dances. This made any play, including those of Shakespeare, legally a burletta, and so not subject to the licensing laws; it helps to explain many of the odd interpolations found in 19th-century productions of ‘straight’ plays.
