Buchenwald
Buchenwald, a concentration camp situated near Weimar in central Germany. It opened in July 1937 and supplied forced labour to local armament manufacturers. It is estimated that out of the 238,980 imprisoned there over eight years, 56,545 died, yet it contained more long-term survivors than most concentration camps. Its 20,000 inmates rose in revolt on 11 April 1945 so that it was already liberated when the US Army arrived there that afternoon. See also Final Solution.
