Buchanan
Buchanan, Canada, Liberia, USA 1. Liberia: founded in 1835 by black Quakers from Pennsylvania and named by them Grand Bassa after the Bassa people. As more Quakers arrived Thomas Buchanan (&–1841), who had been active in the anti‐slavery movement and been governor of Bassa Cove, was appointed the first American governor of Liberia (1839–41) and the colony, as it was then, was renamed after him.2. USA: there are four towns with this name, some after James Buchanan (1791–1868), American President (1857–61).
