Bromley
Bromley, usually ‘woodland clearing where broom grows’, OE brōm + lēah: Bromley Herts. Bromlegh 1248. Bromley Gtr. London, near Beckenham. Bromleag 862, Bronlei 1086 (DB). Bromley, Abbots Staffs. Bromleage 1002. Affix from its early possession by Burton Abbey. Bromley, Great & Bromley, Little Essex. Brumleiam 1086 (DB). Bromley, Kings Staffs. Bromelei 1086 (DB), Bramlea Regis 1167. Affix is Latin regis ‘of the king’, alluding to a royal manor.
However the following has a different origin: Bromley Gtr. London, near Bow. Bræmbelege c.1000. ‘Woodland clearing where brambles grow’. OE bræmbel + lēah. |

Bromley
Bromley , outer borough (1991 pop. 281,700) of Greater London, SE England. It is the largest of the 32 Greater London boroughs with an area of 59 sq mi (153 sq km). Bromley is mainly residential. The Crystal Palace, site of the 1851 Great Exhibition, was within the borough until fire destroyed it in 1936. The statesman William Pitt the younger and H. G. Wells , the writer, were born in Bromley. |
