British Cameroons
British Cameroons, southern part of the German colony of Cameroon which became a British mandate after the First World War and was administered by the neighbouring British colony of Nigeria. The other part became French Cameroons. German residents outnumbered the British and nearly all were Nazi Party members. A few escaped to Germany; the rest were interned in June 1940. The German influence resulted in a poor rate of recruitment from the local population of 400,000, only some 3,500 enlisting.
