Brasil

Brasil

Brasil or Brazil, or Hy Brazil, a legendary island in the Atlantic Ocean. It was one of the Insulae Purpuraricae described by Pliny, and so convinced were the early geographers of its existence that they included it in their maps, sometimes attaching it to the Azores group but more often showing it in mid-ocean some hundreds of miles due west of Ireland. Its existence was shown on some charts published as late as 1853.
