Book of life
Book of life (Heb., Sefer ha-Ḥayyim). A book in heaven in which Jews believe the names of the righteous are inscribed. In Psalm 69. 28, the poet declares that his enemies should be ‘blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be enrolled with the righteous’. According to Ashkenazi belief, God's judgement is sealed during Sukkot, when a slip of paper recording each person's fate falls from heaven—hence the Yiddish greeting, ‘A gute kvitl’, ‘A good slip/seal!’

Book of Life
Book of Life The Hebrews believed that Yahweh kept a register of living persons, from whom the ungodly could be blotted out (Ps. 69: 28). In the NT Paul mentions a book which records the names of believers (Phil. 4: 3). At the judgement of the dead (Rev. 20: 12) some are entered in the ‘book of life’, according to their works. The seer seems to envisage a kind of accounts book (or scroll, Rev. 5: 1) with debit and credit columns.
