Lecan, Book of
Lecan, Book of. Like many other Irish manuscript miscellanies, the Book of Lecan (or ‘Great Book of Lecan’) was a product of the Gaelic cultural revival, written between 1390 and 1418 by Giolla osa Mór Mac Firbhisigh, head of a west Sligo school of seanchaidhe or traditional historians, and scribe of the texts of many Old Irish sagas in the Yellow Book of Lecan. The contents of the Great Book, however, which Giolla osa transcribed for his own use with the help of a number of assistants or pupils, include a poem of his own composition on the landowning families of O'Dowda's country, a comprehensive corpus of updated genealogies of the Irish nobility, and the texts of many pre‐Norman historical tracts.
