Durrow, Book of
Durrow, Book of (Trinity College Dublin MS 57), a decorated manuscript containing a Latin text of the Gospels, along with preliminaries. It is decorated with symbols of the Evangelists, elaborated opening words of certain passages, and ‘carpet’ pages of ornament based on jewellery designs. Academic debate over its date and origin make it one of the most controversial manuscripts in the field of insular script and art. Despite its known association with the monastery of Durrow, Co. Offaly, founded by St Colum Cille, some scholars have argued for an origin in Iona or in North‐umbria. Flann mac Máel Sechnaill (high king 879–916) encased it in a cumdach (shrine). It may date from the late 7th century—making it the earliest surviving fully decorated insular Gospel book—but conflicting views place it in the early 8th century.
