Book of Armagh

Armagh, Book of

Armagh, Book of, a copy of the New Testament made for Abbot Torbach (d. 808) of Armagh in 807 by the master‐scribe Ferdomnach (d. 846) and two assistants. Its small format suggests that it was originally intended for the abbot's personal use, but in the course of time it came to be regarded as one of the insignia of the coarb of St Patrick. As such it was used to record the offering made to Armagh by Brian Bóruma in 1002. Until the late 17th century it was kept as a relic by its hereditary stewards before passing into private hands and eventually into the library of Trinity College, Dublin. What has given this biblical manuscript its special interest for historians is that it also contains at the front a collection of 7th‐century texts about St Patrick and at the back a copy of the 4th‐century Life of St Martin of Tours. The Lives of St Patrick thus collected have sometimes been treated as though they were associated with the later reliquary status of the book.
